About Kalamaki

Kalamaki is a small village at the center point of Crete's south coast, between Agia Galini and Matala, directly on the Libyan sea with a wonderful sandy beach. You will find hospitality and warmth in the small tavernas, all in quiet settings on the beach promenade. All the tavernas offer traditional freshly cooked Greek food (not easily found in the mass tourism resorts) and guests are welcomed to use sun beds and umbrellas free of charge. It's a great place for couples, families with young children, or anyone who wants a quiet vacation in a beautiful place and the village offers a mini market, bakery and some small shops where you will find everything you need for daily use in your holidays.

It is advisable to hire a car to explore the local area outside of Kalamaki. There are several car hire offices in the village. Alternatively, there is a local bus service, or taxis. If you are active you can hire bicycles or walk around the countryside & olive groves.

MATALA

This beach is famous for being the centre for the Flower Children who lived in the caves along side the beach during the late 60s and early 70s. The most striking feature is the series of caves in the sandstone rocks created by nature and by man along the seashore. For thousands of years these caves were left empty until some Hippies discovered them. The natural beauty of the environment and the mild climate during the winter months was an open invitation for the Hippies to inhabit them. Many known artist of that time followed their lead: Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Cat Stevens just to mention a few. This movement of the 60s changed the small peaceful fishing village into a world known meeting place for the Flower Children.

KOMMOS BEACH

Kommo Beach is over 3km long and a fantastic sandy beach. Here you can find secluded & naturist areas with natural shade from the trees, or for more comfort, beach beds and umbrellas for a small charge can be found below the old archaeological site and in front of the famous Bunga Bunga beach bar. Historically Kommo was an important Minoan sea port and town which has held the interest of archaeologists since the 1920s, although nowadays the Greek crisis has meant limited funds for any large scale excavations.

AGIO FARAGO

Agio Farago pebble beach is a short drive from Kalamaki (approx. 30 minutes). En route you can stop to visit the 14th century working Odigitria Monastery with its many chapels and lots of history. To reach Agio farago beach there is a 20 minute walk through the breathtaking gorge where you may see wild mountain goats and keen mountain climbers on the same steep gorge cliffs. The walk is fairly easy and the seaview at the end is amazing, not to mention the swim that you will run take in the crisp clear waters once you arrive.
